Lovely hotel right in the center of town, easy walking to everything. Large rooms named after various literary figures. We stayed in the Lewis Carroll room. Nice to be in a hotel with two comfortable chairs in the room.

I stayed in the Vicarage Suite at the Vanbrugh House Hotel on the 1st April 2019 as I had an interview in Oxford the same day. I was served by an extremely rude receptionist by the name of Mary- which I have been told is no longer working with the hotel. The reservation was made for me by my parents, who used their credit card to book for the stay. However upon presenting the physical card to the hotel they refused to accept it saying that it was against policy to take payment from cards that isn’t in the guests name. This caused a myriad of problems regarding payment after which resulted in the receptionist stating that “Maybe you shouldn’t stay in a hotel if you couldn’t afford it” after which I asked her for an alternative solution on where I should stay when in a foreign place she told me to “go back to my country”- I am from the UK.

My girlfriend and I spent a night at this hotel over the bank holiday, and it was a hidden gem. Review: The staff were friendly and welcoming, the room was spotless however, the view wasn’t great. We had a checkout time of 11pm and asked if we could leave our bags at the hotel to pick up later and the staff were more than happy to accommodate which allowed us to see the city for an extra day without our bags. The only disappointment was the TV which although said on their website as described as a “Smart TV” wasn’t. It simply had extra ports for a laptop or usb, so you can’t stream from your phone or laptop. We had to watch GoT season 8 from my phone which was a shame. Overall the location for the hotel is perfect and a short walk from all the city has to offer! Rating: Room: 5/5 Amenities: 4/5 View: 3/5 Staff: 5/5 Overall: 4/5 Tips: • Order direct and add a bottle of Prosecco or champagne, really adds to the stay. • If you can afford the £28 per night stay at the nearby car park do. If you can’t, use the nearby park and ride which is £4 for 24 hours and only 8-15 mins to the hotel.

Very nice hotel, comfy and great location but we realised late in the night that the tv was not working due to a faulty cable and the hot water was difficult to set up - stuck. A pity for the price paid really.

5/ 5

The hotel is a lovely old building right in the heart of Oxford. The staff are amiable, helpful and a general credit to the establishment. The hotel itself has been wonderfully decorated in a style sympathetic to it’s age. We (my wife and I) enjoyed the junior suite (Oxford Union room) and were very happy with it. Well appointed, two TVs, comfortable bed, shower and iron/ironing board. Power points at the the bed table and various device interfaces next to the TV. The room was spacious, airy, bright and very clean. It’s location is superb, literally 5 minutes or less from the major university buildings, punting and the Ashmolean. Surrounded by a mass of bars and restaurants (a positive and not negative). We didn’t experience any rowdiness after we went to bed in terms of people shouting outside. The only slight criticism we both had was the breakfast came in a hamper but was mostly plastic packaged items, it could’ve been a lot nicer - fine for some but as budding foodies it fell short of the mark. We opted to go out for brunch and donated the food to a homeless charity. All in all if you want to stay in the heart of historic Oxford - in a piece of history indeed - this is your spot. Easily accessible for all major attractions. Awesome.

Great location and very helpful staff, but not sure the high-end room rate is wholly justified. Breakfast hampers rather underwhelming. Rooms are comfortable and some have private outdoor space.

Probably the best location for a hotel in Oxford! However! The hotel is somewhat run down. Little things like tightening the screws on the vanity mirror and a flat floor would make a world of difference. The website claims every room has Dyson fans, but I was in 3 separate rooms over 12 days and only 1 room has such a fun. The others has fans but with no heating function. Lastly, as an experienced guest there, be sure to book a back room and not one with windows facing St. Michael's Street as it can be quite loud if there are events being held at the college across the street, and the garbage trucks will wake you up like clockwork at 7 am.

2/ 5

Great location and pretty clean with good showers. Downsides are that the great, city centre location and historic building (read:single glazing) means it’s exceptionally noisy. Rooms have very limited noise insulation either from other rooms/hotel areas or outside. We stayed over the weekend and the neighbouring pub’s ‘disco night’ closed at midnight Friday and Saturday so at least it’s not an all night affair but still wasn’t ideal for our purposes. Beds extremely hard and in some cases quite creaky. Rooms in some cases in need of a little TLC eg repair broken towel rail, fix discoloured grout, signs of damp in ceiling, large wall cracks, etc. breakfast not amazing - served in a picnic basket to your room - note they come back 2 hours later (separate from room cleaning) to collect your picnic basket - in our case a staff member came into our room uninvited at 11am to retrieve the basket, which seemed odd. Finally, not accessible for people with mobility issues. Even the ground floor rooms have some small steps so wouldn’t be wheelchair accessible, and the rooms are not particularly large so might not accommodate other mobility devices (eg to get to TV/dressing table/one side of bed, the gap to get there was smaller than the standing width of my cabin sized suitcase, so a wheel chair, a person of significant size, etc, would likely not be comfortable in all of the rooms).
