If you find a better pub in York than this please let me know. But pretty sure you won't. It's a bit of a hidden gem. It's always busy but the people who are here were looking for it - or lucky enough to stumble upon after checking out the beer in the shop downstairs. So it's a nice crowd and nice, relaxed atmosphere. There's always a great selection of beers and ales. And reasonably priced pub food. And all that is excluding the decor and vibe which is historic and unique. Easily one of my favourite pubs. Period. If you're in York it's a must visit.

Excellent beer selection downstairs where we got some awesome mead. Upstairs the pub is super charming and made our stay in York incredibly memorable. The beers were good and the food was great! The decor and exposed wood with a fireplace was incredibly memorable. Great atmosphere, food, and drinks. I would absolutely love to go back.

Love this little bar. Loads of taxidermy to see and discuss as we did. Various bottle beers on offer and fraught too. Staff very friendly and helpful. Food platters are amazing. It’s only small so if you’ve got a big party book a table. We were early in the day so plenty of space.

Always visit here when in York. Great little bar above the shop. Good selection of beers and if you can't find one on/behind the bar that you like, you can go down stairs to the shop and select one of the hundreds of different ones there. Food looks good but not eaten here yet. Hard to get a table sometimes. Not suitable for those unable to walk up the stairs.

A bit quirky!!! May have spent a bit longer in there if it weren't for the display of decapitated animal heads nailed to a wall! However the quality of the beer was very good & the bottle shop downstairs had a great range. Worth a visit if you aren't disturbed by the taxidermy display!

Snake your way up the staircase above the shop and walk into a treat. The walls are covered in taxidermy, there were high beams and good tunes. The staff are friendly and the drinks are good. A well thought out beer list, alongside delicious mulled wine and cider. We didn't try the food but it looked like good, hearty fayre.

Went into the shop on Black Friday weekend and it was super busy but the staff were very kind and helpful. I wasn’t sure what I wanted and a lovely person called Ryan took the time to explain some of the drinks to me and recommended me ones based on roughly what I wanted. Even though Ryan seemed busy he was patient with me and super nice.

At first glance this place looks just like an off licence/bottle shop but when you go inside and go upstairs you discover the most amazing bar. The staff were brilliant and helpful with suggestions and knowledge about the beer on tap. The food is superb, and even more amazing considering the absolutely Tony kitchen space they have. All the beers we had were in brilliant condition and really enjoyable

What a quirky little pub! You would walk down stonegate and never find this wonderful tiny bar unless someone told you about it. A good range of beers and ciders to cater for most tastes, ranging from quite weak brews to ales that should be approached with care. The small bar incorporates a cooking space which rules up a small but very tasty menu. Now I have found it I will return, hopefully when I'm not driving, so I can sample more than one of the potion's on offer
