As a student of the University of Brighton, reading an MA Photography, I studied for a year under the assumption that the arts library at St Peter’s House would be a sufficient resource for my research needs. This was correct until I dropped the book making module (waste of time, a sop to a now departed and rather vain lecturer) in favour of a module on aesthetics and cultural theory. While this turned out to be an exciting and rewarding choice, it also demonstrated the limits of St Peter’s to support the endeavour. Many of the books I needed seems to be in stock at Sussex, so I used a SCONUL application to secure temporary membership of that library.
Wow - my experience was extremely positive. The library has a huge lobby with plenty of space to sit, check in/out books and helpful staff. The stacks are spacious and easily navigated and groaning with a huge variety of texts. The periodical selection is excellent and includes some pretty esoteric publications. There is plenty of space to sit in either groups or alone. There are even quiet corners for solitude.
The building is magnificent, austere and light.
There is a cafe.
