Thrifty, more like a thief! I rented a car from Thrifty (Edinbourgh) in July 2019. When picking up the car the officer asked me how much I was going to drive. I answered that about 400 miles. The officer recommended me a contract where I wouldn't have to refuel the car when returning it. They would refuel it for £ 1.24 a liter. He told it would be the cheapest solution for me. I made this deal. When I returned the car the officer told that my retainer would be refunded within a couple of days. After seen how much I was refunded, I was surprised on how much I was charged. I sent an email to the rental company. They replied that when a car is returned, it doesn't matter how much fuel has been consumed because they always charge a full tank! I only used half a tank! So it would have been around £ 30 cheaper if I had refueled myself! I was not told about this charge and I did not find it in my contract. I do not know if this is a common policy in the UK or elsewhere, but at least in my home country, Finland, the customer is only charged for the fuel consumed. In order to know whether such an agreement is worthwhile, the customer would have to do a lot of research and calculations: the quality of the fuel (petrol or diesel), the average fuel consumption of the car, fuel tank size of the car and the kilometers or miles you are going to drive. You have to know the brand and the model of the car in advance in order to make these calculations (I got a different car than what I had booked).
