This English Heritage site covers various stages of history. It was an Iron Age fort and then used by the Normans as the site of the first castle and eventually cathedral for Salisbury (before the bishops moved and the town grew up in its current site). You get some good views over towards Salisbury from the top of the mound and can see the outline of the original Salisbury Cathedral within the grounds,

It's a really nice place so I would recommend visiting if you want to stop by on the way somewhere but I wouldn't plan a trip especially for that. There are toilets and a small car park on site. The place is quite educational and the views over Salisbury are really beautiful!

A lot of history of the site dating back to around the time of Stonehenge being built. Worthwhile to pay to go in to the central area and take a guide. The staff are always friendly and helpful and you can spend hours walking around. Great views over the surrounding countryside with the right weather.

Very scenic. Lovely views on a good day. The outer area is free. The inner area with the ruins is only £6 odd. Toilets. Dog friendly. Parking can be busy on weekends.

The unfortunately often neglected point of interest in Salisbury compared to Stonehenge. But if you have the time and bit of extra money to pay for admission (£6, less with a Stonehenge combined ticket), this is an interesting place to stop at. Essentially the site of old Salisbury that was dismantled and left to decay, old Sarum is the ruins of a former castle. Significantly less crowded and you have a lot more freedom to walk and climb onto most places. Budget 25-45 minutes to visit here.

Great historical place, kids love it here. We visited during Easter and there was a King wandering round giving out 'gold' coins to kids that solved the Easter clues. Lots of fun. Very good at engaging and communicating the history. Can be quite windy as it's exposed so wrap up warm.

Beautiful location for views and walks. You can see the outside and walk around the cathedral ruins without paying. Dog friendly. Pay and display car park unless you are heritage member. Lots of information plaques and discovery trails for the kids. Small shop. Benches and picnic areas.

This was a great experience. I wish I could have seen it in all its glory. I'm happy to have at least this experience because I know with the sands of time it will eventually be completely gone. The staff were incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. I highly recommend a visit if you get the opportunity.

Old Sarum is well worth a visit. A bit of culture is always good but factor in beautiful countryside, lovely walks and you have a great morning or afternoon out! The kids welcomed the chance to exercise their imagination (with a little encouragement). There is also a fab gift shop here. We joined English Heritage on our visit here so ended up not paying on the day and for only 9 quid a month we can go visit a load more wonder places now. Winner, winner Christmas Dinner! What am I saying? Lol! What are you doing now? Nothing much? Check out Old Sarum on a map and if you can, go make a visit. You won't be disappointed and even your dog will love it!
