This is such a cool library - and I wasn't even visiting to borrow any books! There's a nice little cafe, plenty of quiet reading places, and the library's own mini-museum, which, given its literary focus, offered something I haven't seen in that many other places. I spent quite a while looking around, learning from the displays - great fun!

Although this is a repository for serious researchers (registration required) don't be put off from entering this imposing building as both their permanent exhibition and regular temporary exhibitions are really worth seeing (and they're free!). There is a small cafe that sells sandwiches and cakes and a lovely gift shop with Scottish books and a small gift range. The NLS also hosts events and has regular educational 'how to research' type workshops. They have nice clean, accessible toilets.

Very impressive collection and interior of a reference-only library. (The Central Library across the street serves other purposes.) The staff here were very helpful and friendly, and I just love the scholarly atmosphere of this place.
