Lucius Books is my favourite book shop. This is the place where I go when I need a special gift. The staff is not only very qualified in antiquarian and rare books, their speciality, they are also very friendly and always willing to help. On occasions I also used their shipping services and the delivery of the books has always been impeccable, fast and secure. Their new location, just around the corner from the train station, makes it very handy for those like me who do not live in York and want drop in for a browse through their always new acquisitions. If you are in York, I really invite you to pay a visit to Lucius Books, you will not be disappointed.

An outstanding selection of rare books and artworks, some of which I would expect to see only in a museum! Friendly and knowledgeable staff and a relaxed atmosphere. I hope to visit again soon.

There's a wide selection of rare and classic books. Though there are also more modern publications, and the staff were extremely helpful and even gift wrapped a book (a Murakami publication) as it was a gift for a family member. I would say though that I'm honestly a bit too young to have read/appreciate a sizeable share of the items there, but your mileage may vary if you're not a zoomer like me who predominantly reads modern science fiction.

I recently purchased H. G. Wells When the Sleeper Wakes as a gift for my partner who lives in America. The price was more than reasonable for such a well preserved book. The book arrived well packaged and gift wrapped (which I was pleasently surprised by!). All of my questions were answered quickly and in a friendly manner. I am absolutely going to be ordering more books from Lucious Books. I have, and will continue to recommend to anybody. Kind regards, Michael.

I bought a book from this lot in 2015 for £2,507. Today I met 'James' at the shop 7/5/21, a young man with a profound cavalier attitude. He offered me £400 for the book which is in 'Fine Condition.' ''Of Human Bondage'' by Somerset Maugham, first edition 1915 published by William Heinemann, signed with a note to the purchaser from Somerset himself. The same book can be bought online for over £4,000, top price listed £5,400. We all have to work to tight margins however, this boy stuck me as an extortionist ! BE CAREFULL in this shop; . I might add he priced the book after less than a minute of viewing it. I do note most of the comments on this site are about purchasing books. NONE commenting on the rip-off prices 'Lucius Books' offer for 106 year old tomes. Absolutely disgusted. I'd like to suggest if buying OR selling at 'Lucius', get a quote elsewhere first. you could save a small fortune. I can now appreciate fully why Amazon are doing so well : .. Mr Hallgate (the extortionist ) suggests I bought this book online in his reply on TRUST Advisor. .....he can wriggle all he wants, my invoice number from his shop was 7844, bought on the 28/10/2015. Your witness: . Mr James Hallgate ( the extortionist ) suggests I bought this book in an online auction, in his reply on TRUST Advisor. ..... he can wriggle all he wants, my invoice number from his shop was 7844, bought on the 28/10/2015. My account number 4438: Your witness: AND I add, he denies I purchased the book from Lucius Books he further falsely suggests the book has been rebound since I purchased it, THE BOOK is in the exact same condition I bought it. He really is a piece of arrogant work.

We looked everywhere for a perfect 1st edition in wrapper of Enid Blyton's 'First Term at Malory Towers' (1946). Three generations of girls (so far) have grown up with this story. At last we found one here! The transaction was swift, the service outstanding, the delivery prompt, the book itself superb. It is now logged as a family heirloom to be passed down the female line! Many thanks.
