In April 2021, I visited the Kwik Fit branch on Boundary Road, Portslade for a new tyre. The tyre was fitted and there were no problems with this.
While I was waiting at home, a member of staff called me and told me that my rear brake pads and rear brake discs discs were below the legal limit and would need to be changed. He quoted me £230, then when I said that I'd get a second opinion, he offered me a "special deal" and offered to do the job for £210. Again, I declined. My car had recently passed an MOT with no advisories for brakes, so I thought this was strange.
Luckily for me, my Dad is a qualified mechanic, so I drove to his house and he inspected the brake pads and brake discs for me. He used a tool to measure the thickness of the pads and discs. The brake pads had lost less than 1ml of thickness and were well above the legal limit.
The staff member at Kwik Fit is either incompetent or was trying to rip me off. If I hadn't had a qualified mechanic to seek advice from, I would have needlessly spent £210. I find this worrying, as I wonder how many people have been ripped off at this branch and spent money unnecessarily.
I emailed the Kwik Fit Customer Service team in April, they told me that they would investigate the matter urgently and get back to me. I still haven't heard back.
I would advise people to avoid Kwik Fit and find a reputable garage.
