Great facilities here. Used the squash court and changing rooms and had everything I needed. Would have been good if they had a water fountain near the squash courts so that we didn't have to trek to the gym to get water in between games, but other than that everything was great. The staff were friendly and helpful and it looked like they were doing some good improvements to the climbing wall facilities.

I am taking my daughter (7) to a Saturday dance class every week. Reception guy knows my face as I also used to be a member and come all the time. Daughter wanted a glass of water but I had no cash. What I did have was a Revolut MasterCard and Apple pay. Tried both of the automates machines. None would work. Approached reception. “We have a minimum of £5 for a card purchase”. “I just want a bottle of water.” I then suggested I pay £5 on the card and get £4 back and a bottle of water. It’s a debit card so no loss. “Sorry. No can do. Maybe try the swimming pool two floors down”. “Rules are rules”. And your rules suck.

This gym is a good facility with a strength and conditioning room with awesome lifting equipment that any bodybuilder would be pleased with. The outlooks gym has a nice view of the park with various ellipticals, a stair master, treadmills and various bikes. Air conditioning in both areas is genuinely fantastic. I've worked out here when it was 30C outside and it was actually great due to this. Classes are good also, but not the primary focus of this gym. However, staff at reception can be quite rude and is a well-known issue which management has done little about over the last 4 years despite the reviews on here. Checking in also requires them to scan you card, which can lead to a delay just to get in as at reception other matters are also handled which are more time consuming. An automated system to get in the facility would help ease congestion.

Gym isn’t too expensive but the climbing wall is poorly maintained and holds don’t seem to be regularly cleaned. Also they don’t provide climbing shoe hire and allow climbing in trainers which isn’t particularly safe.

I always love coming to this gym, everywhere is clean and tidy and you get the impression the staff are all really proud to work here. There is a great range of equipment, the staff are knowledgable and you can work out to the level and intensity you wish to - there is both a general gym/weights area (Outlooks) and a more focussed free weights area, which means you don't feel inadequate next to some muscle-man! It is also very affordable, which is why I will travel some way to use the facilities. I also love the climbing wall as a different exercise option occasionally.

Edit October 2020 I had an unlucky freak accident at KK earlier this year when I dropped a dumbbell on a hard plastic shaker. The sharp edges of the broken shaker created a nasty, painful bloody finger wound to the bone that had to be fixed by a plastic surgeon. I praise the staff at KK for quickly realising the urgency of the situation, caring for the wound to stop the bleeding, and calling me a taxi to A&E. They even kept my bike in their storage for a couple of days! On another note, receptionist politeness is now very good compared to 3 years ago. I have always been positive about lifting at KK. I urge everyone who is serious about lifting to give Kelsey Kerridge a try. Overall this gym is a good facility with a strength and conditioning room with awesome lifting equipment that any bodybuilder would be pleased with. An outdoor but covered jacuzzi with a view of the park and the sauna are additional lovely features.

3/ 5

Kelsey Kerridge has been a part of my routine for a number of years now and previously I would always look forward to training there. Over the last couple of years, however, I find myself consistently and increasingly disappointed with the place. Yes, the facilities are generally good, offering a reasonably comprehensive selection of activities and equipment in two separate gyms (plus courts, climbing wall, classes etc.) at an affordable price, but the last couple of years it is overall a much less pleasant place to visit. The freeweight gym in particular is in dire need of some attention: weight plates and bars are generally strewn across the floor, and where bars are left conveniently on benches or in squat racks, they will generally be (inconveniently) left loaded, thus will require unloading when you wish to use them. The bars are never cleaned; liquid chalk and skin deposits thickly coat the knurling of the power bars (at other gyms bar cleaning with a wire brush is part of routine maintenance and takes a few minutes per week) which is just nasty. On the plus side the clientele are as varied and friendly as ever which is why I still train there. Having been kindly asked to add a comment on Covid-19 safety I will say that there is a sign on the wall in the stairwell approaching reception requesting that customers wear a face covering when moving around the facility (this is encouraging). Marginally less encouraging is the experience of actually entering the reception area to find staff members standing side-by-side (social distancing, anyone? Just need to add wine and cheese to make it a proper work meeting) and generally maskless (in fairness the older staff members are more likely to be masked, whereas the younger [whether through wilful non-compliance or simple lack of comprehension, bless, judge for yourself] tend not to bother). The theatre of hand-cleaning and equipment-wiping is certainly well-catered for, although the effectiveness of this in combating the spread of an airborne pathogen is of course somewhat questionable (there's a great piece by Emmanuel Goldman in the Lancet about why surface cleaning is a waste of time for prevention of Covid-19 transmission, Google it), although it's always nice to have clean equipment and it's hugely important to be seen to be doing your bit even if you can't quite manage to pop on a face covering. The door to the otherwise completely unventilated freeweights gym is often left open, although I went in on Thursday to find it closed, making the room entirely unventilated (although the air conditioner was on, circulating the stale air around the room nicely. Despite rather enjoying the scent of maximum effort and Lynx I opened the door). Upstairs (the excellent Outlooks gym) is usually much better: the sliding patio doors are often left open, making the gym very airy and well ventilated, although even now it is not uncommon to find all of these sliding doors closed, despite the obvious risk to health (obvious of course assuming that one has followed the last 21 months of news coverage). Plus I suppose that some people feel the cold more than others. During the summer the doors to the stairwells were propped open, facilitating airflow through the building, although for the last few weeks the tendency is to find them closed. I have used gym facilities that are better ventilated, and also that are less well ventilated. Hopefully this is helpful.
