Today I shared the same sort of bad experience many of you have had with this shopkeeper. I went in to buy a newspaper. I saw a Daily Mirror on the sweet counter, but no other newspapers. He said "what are you looking for?" I said I wanted to buy a different newspaper. He asked if I wanted anything else...I said, just the newspaper. He said, no I can't do that - you have to buy something else. I was about to leave, and looked at him and said "I'm pretty sure that's illegal you know..." He called something to me but I was already near the door. This means that he advertises himself as a Newsagent, but hides his newspapers, and sells them selectively. I'm not an expert, but isn't that against the Trades Descriptions Act ?? Don't buy here - he'd already been very rude to my partner a while ago, over a similar issue. There are enough newsagents in Brighton. He is turning away business, so he's only hurting himself.

I bought a Sunday newspaper today (paid cash) and was told by the shop keeper that I should buy something else or he makes a loss. I now see from the other reviews he has form for this attitude - he got quite verbally aggressive when I pointed out that with the choice of shops available, it is good that I even came in (and as a resident would probably do so more frequently if he was friendly, as I like to support local businesses). Ironically, he is more likely to make a loss if he alienates customers with his rudeness who may well have bought more items in the future, but now will no longer want to return.

I have been buying in this shop for 14+ years and I always try to support local business but after today's treatment I will not set my foot in this shop as loyal customers mean nothing to the guy who works in Kayes News. Whenever I go there I always have spare change but this time I only had my card on me so when shop assistant wanted to charge me extra for a bar of chocolate and crisps I questioned charges and he then told me of minimum spend of £3. I politely mentioned that I thought these charges were not legal anymore. He immediately started to raise his voice and shout at me saying he knows his rights and when I accidentally dropped a bar of chocolate he ordered in a very rude manner to pick it up (whilst I was doing it!). He then snatched pack of crisps off me and threw them on his counter and demanded I leave his shop. I was really shocked by this. I always found him very rude as whenever I went in there he would talk on the phone in foreign language and not for a second he would stop a conversation when serving customers to say "hello" or "thank you", but today's experience was a completely new level of rudeness. I am stunned that this guy gets away with it as I only read couple of reviews today that clearly show I am not the only one who experienced this.

I bought a newspaper from this shop today. I have never known such a rude assistant! I asked a question regarding the newpapers and he did not answer. When I asked him why hehad ignored me he said you are arubbish customer because you are only buying a newpaper, i dont make any money from the papers therefore i dont have to answer you. I didnt say anything back, i took out a foldup bag to put the paper in. He then said how dare you put your bag on my counter, get out of my shop you rubbish customer! I was flabbergasted! I stopped in the doorway and said you are very rude, he said get out of my shop at once you are blocking the good customers. I am a pensioner i was so upset I told the people in Timberland who just shrugged. Then I went back and took a photo to share on social media to warn other people what a rude arrogant man he was and it was ageist.

Popped in to buy a bottle of water today with my seven year old daughter as it was very hot in Brighton. £1.00 for water. Fine. Asked to pay contactless for obvious reasons. Chap wanted to charge 30p for contactless transaction! I did not have a single penny on me so I said I did not wish to buy the water as I don’t agree with charging people to buy something. So I left the water on the counter and said goodbye. The chap behind the counter told me if I didn’t pay for the water he would phone the Police and that I was immoral for not buying it. I reminded him that it was my choice if I wanted to pay extra and that I would prefer to go to another shop that has free contactless. He then came around the counter and with an aggressive stance and shouting and swearing demanded that we leave his shop and never come back. I have been using this shop for 14 years as we used to live on Middle Street. This was a shocking experience for my daughter and I. My daughters always want to pop in for an ice lolly or ice cream. I am glad my wife and other younger daughter were not with us as I don’t think he would have curbed his behaviour. Just disgraceful. It must have been the heat? Such a shame as I always try to support small local businesses but I must advise not to use this shop especially if with young children.
