2/ 5

I had a GRP composite door made with a Nan Ya 838 New England (Navy) slab supplied by Distinction Doors. They supply these to many door manufacturers as well as using these for their own brand of doors. A door slab is just the door. No hinges, knobs, or frame. Distinction Doors claim in their marketing “EXCEPTIONAL DURABILITY” for their doors made with the same Nan Ya slab’s, and go on to state the “high impact resistant glass reinforced polyester (GRP) skin will maintain its pristine appearance in the face of everyday knocks and scratches and beyond”. They also state that all of their doors are manufactured to the highest of standards and built to stand the test of time. The door’s durability is reflected by the comprehensive structural and surface warranty that we offer with all of our products. If all of the above is true then why does my door scratch very easily from for example a shopping bag lightly brushing against the surface of it? Even before the doors first anniversary it had a few light scratches and marks!!! What makes matters worse is that even when the surface is very lightly scratched, and you cannot feel the scratches when passing your finger nail over them, they still show white underneath, making them more noticeable! I was told my door was dyed through, but when I complained to Ombudsman Services that it wasn’t Distinction Doors made the following statement: “The thickness of our paint is approximately 30 microns dependent on the colour (Note: My supplier claimed 40 microns). Some of our reds and greens are higher than this as they need additional base coats to build up to the correct colour over the base substrate colour. The term ‘through colour’ is a misnomer used within the industry, slabs that come direct from Nan Ya are painted on a pre-pigmented substrate, for example, Red is sprayed onto a pink base, Black is sprayed onto a grey base, Green onto a pale green base and so on. The paint colour does NOT go all the way through the skin. Our painted doors are either sprayed onto White or Buff doors this is why the white will be show through when the paint is scratched. In fact, if you scratch any Nan Ya painted colour the scratch will also appear white, regardless of base substrate colour, as the scratch will cut through the glass fibres within the skin and this will show as white, just like scratching a piece of glass”. Distinction confirmed my door was not a painted one, but it still shows through white underneath if scratched/marked. A misnomer they state. So I decided to check for my self and obtained several samples of composite doors from other door manufacturers and I did a scratch test on them. None of them showed through white. In fact one double glazing company who make their own slabs, also use Nan Ya ones when a customer requests this brand, so I also received some Nan Ya samples to test and even those did not scratch as easily as my door, although they did show through white when scratching the surface very hard. Therefore as my door scratches more easily either Nan Ya make good quality sample pieces or my door is below or at the bottom end of the specification for paint thickness! Interestingly one of Distinction Doors competitors states the following on their website: “It should also be noted that our range of composite door skins is coloured throughout the whole depth of the 2mm skin to ensure that any scratches to the door skins do not reveal a different coloured surface below. Some unscrupulous businesses supply all their doors with white skins and spray paint the door surface in an attempt to achieve similar short term looks, however which these doors get scratched they will reveal an unsightly white skin below the painted finish”. So when a misnomer not a misnomer? My supplier and Distinction Doors offered me a pot of paint to cover up the scratches on my door, but I refused this because I was told I would never have to paint my maintenance free composite door!

A big thank you to your technician, Martin, who attended to replace a faulty glass panel in our front door. He arrived on time, was courteous and he completed the repair with the minimum of fuss. This cost us nothing as the door is under guarantee. We are very pleased with the product and the after care was excellent. Thank you.

Ordered my door through a local company, they used Distinction as their supplier. I wish I’d done my homework first because after waiting 3 months for my door I've been told I won’t be getting it for approximately another 2 months as it’s stuck in a congested port. Turns out Distinction doors are made in Taiwan. I phoned Distinction myself for more info and they refused to deal with me but did confirm a lot of their doors are currently stuck in congested ports and there are heavy delays. Wish I’d just checked that these were made in the UK, a mistake I’ll never make again with something like this! Hoping when the door finally gets to me (they won’t provide any estimates of when that will be at all, I’m literally just being told I have to wait, end of) it’s good quality... but won’t hold my breath.

2/ 5

The only reason I am not giving a 0 is because I do not know the business nor have I purchased from them. My complaint is because of one of the drivers of the company van who nearly crashed in to me while I was driving when he was coming out of a car park. When I horned to make him aware i was driving past he then threw his hands up at me. This is a perfect representation of how the employees should not represent the business and should always be on "good behaviour" when in company attire/uniform. And to not misrepresent or give a bad impression of the company in any way. I will give the company the benefit of doubt and not give it 0 or a 1.
