1/ 5

Really want to like this club as it’s the only one in my area. The club can be good on some occasions but unfortunately after being a member for over a year there have been a few too many issues. I’ve had to quit due to the problems, but quitting takes 3 months. Posting a few examples of many issues here to help inform others. Place is overcrowded so it’s difficult to use the facilities (even off peak when I always attend) and classes such as spin and blaze are typically fully booked . It’s annoying paying for facilities that I cannot use. Some of the staff can be rude and a bit clueless. I’m not self conscious or anything but during my first time trying a new type of exercise (that I didn’t expect to be any good at right away ) I was pulled aside and told it wasn’t for me and I should try a different class. The class they suggested was not as enjoyable or challenging for me. Surely my enjoyment and personal sense of achievement is most important. Staff shouldn’t discourage people who want to challenge themselves even if they go at a slightly slower pace. The booking system says all levels but for some reason this was not the reality. On my first attempt at blaze I booked an introduction class. The instructor refused to let me have a try at this, and simply spent time chatting, he explicitly stated there was no point in the introductory session so we were just going to chat. How am I supposed to know if I want to take part in a full session if I can’t try it out first? I did not get into sports clothing, come all the way to the club and take valuable time out my day for small talk, I wanted to do some exercise obviously. Staff apply “rules” inconsistently. Sometimes premium members need to pay £2 for a towel and other times it’s part of the premium membership depending on the staff member at the desk. When I questioned this inconsistency I was told by a front desk staff member that she already had a migraine for others complaining about it all day, and that they were running a business so what did I expect...Yes true it is a business, and I already paid the agreed monthly price by direct debit, so there should not be an issue. Front desk staff cannot think flexibility or for themselves. Small queries require a meeting with management, which is such a waste of customers time, just emailing the proposed solution would be more efficient or perhaps give front desk staff the information they need to perform basic admin tasks and answer questions . They have made a number of my guests feel very unwelcome and as such they did not want to join. Staff try to confiscate the membership card in exchange for giving guests a loan of a cheap padlock which means that DL lose money as I would not be willing to buy food or drink without access to my card for discounts (staff seemed to lack the ability to make this connection). Facilities need upgrading as always faulty. spa has not been working on a number of occasions when I brought a guest. Why only one jacuzzi?surely a club of this size could have a few. On one occasion my guest only popped in for an hour to use the jacuzzi while I was swimming. As it was broken they had to sit in their shorts to wait on me. If I had known about this upon arrival I would have saved a guest pass. Also there are many broken tiles in the pool, and mould in showers. Another time my guest wanted to play badminton and all the nets were on the floor. Despite going to reception to ask for help, it took along time for someone to arrive and we spent most of our time slot trying to put the nets back together by ourselves. I booked a week in advance so this shouldn’t be an issue. I’ve been to other outstanding Clubs by different companies Costing £40-60 but for £111 at DL it’s poor quality. I expected a little more attention to detail. Had this place been less overcrowded with decent staff I would have been more than happy to pay whatever and be a member for life. I would recommend that others take time to look into alternatives there is higher quality elsewhere.

The gym is actually overpriced and applies different prices to people depending on your race and income. In the end, they will argue with you it’s a business and we have to do that. If you cannot attend the club for business reason you have to tell them a month ahead and pay half price. This is so ridiculous. They regard their member as silly people and don’t lack of money. Can’t believe they lack of well trained instructors of group exercise class. One female combat instructor always abuses people who does better than her. But to be honest, some member actually do better than an instructor. You should respect members and respect your country’s brilliant education on you. Some instructors are always not well prepared of the new class release of new lesmills class, made loads of mistakes which is a shame for David Lloyd and members and always change the older music to increase the attendance. In my mind, they should improve their technique. I felt I was cheated of you doing so. After the experience, some of my friends gave up this club and turn to New Haven club, which gives a cheaper option of membership. So people, if you are considering this club I would recommend you read all the one star review. People tell you the truth. Don’t know why recently there are more and more five star no comments reviews.

My best gym ever. Very friendly staff. Great swimming and tennis facilities. The swimming pool water does not irritate the eyes unlike in some other public places. A huge and appropriately hot sauna by Edinburgh standards. The restaurant is a great place to have a get together or just to watch a sports channel. Will come back when I can.

Overall a good gym , let down by the cafe ( overpriced and food not great , bananas run out all the time something I feed my kid on a lot - I would presume fresh organic fruit should be the no.1 seller here) the showers run out of shower gel frequently and last time I used the family changing room I had to clean up a females discarded sanitary products - disgusting, (but could happen anywhere - its kept fairly clean ) The gym its self is well equipped , pool great - plenty room in the car park , not a cheap gym so would expect these wee things to be kept on top of for 5 star review .

1/ 5

I had been in this club for a year. The first thing I need to say is this gym have different prices for most member. I kept receiving emails from them “We are cutting down our price”. So if you want to join the gym just after Christmas or during summer time. Because the cycling classes at those time only have 4-6 members attending in total and you cannot feel any group feeling and you can also have chance to book Blaze class which normally is fully booked. They seem to have a generalised price list but when I asked my friends in the gym, my membership card is the most expensive one with limited benefits (used to be 106, now 92 pounds) but other people pay 60 pounds a month as a single person joining the gym. They advise me to talk with the club staff but for this Asian lad, that never works. And got a reply which seems to suggest that they are not willing to let this poor student to enjoy more service for paying less. I think because I am a student and because I am Asian. So I deserve to pay more. To be honest, I don’t lack this amount of money but as a human being, I think this unwritten policy is very unfair and it is not good as such a big company that applies price to different members. I have talked with staff for three times about this. First twice they replied but the third time they kept silent. Oh God. I was still a member. So when you are considering to joining the club ask some members how much do they pay because your told price is defo the most expensive one. I was a group instructor before. When I noticed that one female Combat staff were not satisfied with my brilliant technique, she shouting at me stop showing off in the studio and pointing using her index finger. Later on she explained, making a Scottish joke from the mouth of sports manager with no sorry. To be honest, I don’t think some of the group instructors are qualified to teach in this well equipped club. I even doubt if their certificate is still within the expire date. When I ask one of them do you have seasonal training? She said no. So I immediately understand she is using her out of date technique to cheat members here. But it’s a pity that they think members like different music but they never realise it’s because their ability is too poor to cheer members up. Anyway, I would resume that female instructor is one of the racist. She doesn’t know how to respect a member but very cautious that members are better than her technique. Since the bad experience I moved to new haven club. They always have a smile on their face which made me quite comfortable. But their classes is even more terrible. Some of them are good. But only 45 minutes class because they lack of good instructors. They only have one 60 min combat class but you know I don’t want to attend that more. They( Edinburgh) have an outdoor swimming pool which can be used all year round. A Blaze studio that asks you to buy the heart rate band which seems not cheap at all ( nearly 70 qd). I would use that money to buy an Apple Watch which can even detect my falling down. And for blaze studio you can only use that one for free once and after that you have to buy your own heart rate band. So you will need more further investment. And also gloves you have to buy your own, because the free one is very stinky although they have the ability to wash them. The reception always only have one slow pace staff that ask for your membership card to get a towel but I noticed that other member with the same card can get a free towel. One male staff he is very nice with a big smile. The weightlifting facilities have a range of choices for elder people. So if you are a fan of tennis and outdoor swimming, this place is defo a great or the only choice for you. But if you just want to use gym and classes, I would advise you consider it and ask them if you can get discount. Because there are so many places you can choose. One more advice for this club is try to be more friendly to members and hire the right staff. Hope you can see my sincere review and keep ignoring me lol.
