5/ 5

I worked at this institution as a Nursing Assistant when it was known as the Coventry Mental Health Unit. This work consisted primarily of doing nothing. One was simply employed to be a spare pair of hands when a patient needed restraining in order for sedatives to be forcibly injected. Whilst the Police enforce property law, psychiatry enforces mental Order. The common denominator is brutality.

1/ 5

Total lack of communication between different sections of the center and all other NHS services. Dismissive, uncaring staff who treat patients with a total lack of empathy, make no attempt to understand their patients' situation or needs, and simply want to complete their checklist and get you out of the room with as little time, effort and intervention as possible. They genuinely do not care, even if you tell them that you are likely to harm yourself as soon as you leave. If you disagree with the staff in any way, no matter how politely, they will immediately become rude and confrontational, occasionally even aggressive. The prevailing attitude makes this an incredibly stressful and unpleasant place to be, and causes enormous distress to already suffering patients. There is no help for anyone suffering from mental illness here. The only time they will put effort into your "care" is if you have caused harm to or are a risk to another person, being a risk to yourself is completely meaningless to them.
