Friendly staff, cosy environment. Not a huge selection of books, but it's not a very big bookstore.

Friendly staff, cosy environment. Not a huge selection of books, but it's not a very big bookstore. It does have a nice cafe area upstairs, which is surely a plus.

It's time for honesty about bookshops. I have to say I found this one disappointing. Manchester is a great city and Manchester University has a long and respected tradition. I expected much more from Manchester University bookshop. There are simply not enough academic titles on sale here, not nearly enough. The reason is not hard to find. Much of the ground floor is given over to best-selling fiction that can be had anywhere. And half of the top floor is given over to a coffee shop. I'm sorry, the staff are great, the location is wonderful, but the opportunity is wasted. Bookshops are for books, university bookshops are for the curiously minded who want to learn and to dig deep in specialist corners, not be merely entertained. And coffee shops are for coffee.
