The Covenanters Memorial in Deerness dates to 1888 but the story behind it begins over 200 years earlier at the Battle of Bothwell Bridge near Glasgow on 22nd June 1679. When King Charles II was restored to the throne in 1660, he introduced religious reforms that forced the Covenanters to leave the established church.
Very fascinating. Would be great to be able to learn about the history of this site. Who, what, when, how long... there’s little information to be had and it is great. But we want more information that what we have been provided if there is. Any juicy stories? Unless we missed it. And if so, where can we get it. Well worth going and visiting.
If you look carefully on the ground here, you'll see the shape of the old gallows which used to be here and has been memorialized in a stone pattern. Look to the north and you'll see a pub named for someone named Mary who according to folklore survived her execution and was given her freedom.
The site of the old gallows which saw the extinguishing of many souls, including the incredible story of "Half-Hangit Maggie", who's unfortunate lot in life led her to be tried and executed on this spot. Through great fortune, her first execution did not take, and when she was returned to be executed again, lawyers intervened, saving her life. She led a fulfilling life afterwards, and her story is memorialized in a nearby pub. The Covenanters' Memorial sits at the heat of Grassmarket, and in the shadow of the Castle. It's a nice place to relax for a while, and the names of the Covenanters who met their ends here have their names inscribed by the memorial.
It’s one of places, the ghost tour visited at night that I attended.
