New to drinking loose tea I entered the shop this Saturday nervously, expecting shelves of 101 differing Earl Grey’s and toffee-nosed staff. What I got was rows and rows of teas; fruit, green, spiced, hot chocolates, ice teas, minty teas and some I couldn’t even pronounce. While staring like a rabbit in headlights at the choice, and thinking I should just slowly back out of the shop avoiding eye contact as this would be SO expensive, a young lady came over and asked if she could help. Wincing that I’d been seen I pointed at a beautiful little pack of loose mint tea (the only thing other than a mass produced round teabag I’d ever tried before) and managed the sentence “Mint tea..... I think I like that...” She asked if I had tried loose tea much and I thought “here we go, this is where she’ll point me out to her coworkers and they all laugh hysterically “. But no. Once I told her that I’d never really tried it before she lit up like a Christmas tree and said “This is going to be so much fun! Let’s try some!!” There were so many available to try in the shop, and she took me through them all. Admittedly, while enjoying her enthusiasm and knowledge the voice in my head was still screaming “it’s gonna be expensive!” After deciding that I, personally, found drinking green tea akin to licking a dead sock I discovered that I do love both mint and fruity teas. So here it came; the cost. My purse had scrambled screaming to the bottom of my handbag in its desire not to be gutted and while fishing around and finally cornering it she gave me the prices. I had to ask twice just to be sure, but for a choice between getting either a refill pack (the sealed leaves in a lovely cardboard pack) or caddy (sealed leaves in a delightful tea tin which you can then bring back for refills) they were still well within even my meagre budget! The clean and light shop, the choices around you and especially the keen, professional and very welcoming staff made the whole experience of buying loose tea something actually special. So, as I sit here, hugging my first fresh, crisp and warming cup of mint tea I can honestly say, go there, meet the staff and enjoy a taste overwhelmingly better than a one-cup teabag.
