Definition of an Aladdins cave. Amazing and unusual books at very cheap rates. It gives you a great sense of exploring to find the right book for you. Many unique titles. I really enjoy the mix of second hand and first hand copies.

Really interesting selection of fiction at very reasonable prices. You can really tell that the owner(s) put a lot of thought into the books/authors they want to sell. Staff are friendly and helpful, would recommend to residents and as well as tourists just passing through.

A gorgeous bookshop full of books I haven't seen before anywhere else. A great selection of all genres and requirements, even having a full floor dedicated to old Latin books. I personally got a set of Folio published Lord of the Rings books, normally selling at £100, and they sold them for £85. Great bookshop, and a must-visit as you never know the gems you may find.

What an amazing find!! Wonderful shop front like something from a fantastical world, then stepping into what you'd think is a small one room shop, turns into a whole townhouse of 4 levels and rooms of books from old and new publication and prints!! Beautiful work and the staff were amazing! Affordable books on mythology which was my favourite! And even saw a few rare books such as "East of the Sun and West of the Moon" with an illustrator i adore, I couldn't afford its rarity but I did enjoy the discussion I had with the staff about it. Amazing experience at every step!

On 10.12.2021 at around 3:55pm my partner and I visited your book shop. Upon entering, the man who was sat behind the counter (grey hair, glasses, and was knitting), stated; 'We ask everyone to wear masks.' To which I turned round and held up my sunflower lanyard with my exemption card attached to it and said, 'I'm exempt from wearing them.' (My partner was wearing one as he isn't exempt). The man then rudely replied something along the lines of: 'In my opinion I think that when entering places, especially small business, people who are exempt should announce that they are exempt. It would certainly make MY job easier.' I was so taken aback that I felt a wave of anger and upset wash over me and I didn't know what else to say so instead I held my lanyard and card up again and stated, 'I'm actually autistic so I don't have to wear one.' He then replied something along the lines of: 'I don't want to know that I'm just saying.' I only made it into one of the first rooms where the art prints are before breaking down and crying as I felt so upset that I had just been spoken to in such a way and made to feel like a bad person for NO reason. I shortly afterwards left as I couldn't bear to be in there any longer. This ruined my visit entirely and my afternoon also as I LOVE this bookshop and my experience was completely ruined. Fair enough you can say to people 'We ask that everyone wears a mask,' but the conversation should stop when somebody says, 'I am exempt' and shows you their exemption card and lanyard. In fact, the previous time I came into the shop the young girl upon me saying I am exempt said okay and let me continue into the shop. This is as it should be. Hidden disabilities do exist, and this is very discriminatory. As an autistic person navigating the world is difficult and scary enough as it is, and things like this do not help at all. I could have easily gone into an autistic meltdown/shutdown. Let me finish by saying that this bookshop has always been one of my favourite places to visit in York and is somewhere I always try to visit whenever I am there. Howsoever, I shall not be visiting again due to the incredibly rude and distressing encounter I had whilst in there. I think you should seriously consider your practices and how your staff talk to and treat people.

Everything about this place is fantastic: whether it be the wide variety; the age and beauty of some of the books; or simply the ability to browse for hours, and come back another day to do the same thing again, and discover even more wonderful books. The prices are very reasonable considering the books available for sale, and the opportunity to find some truly wonderful and rare books put this bookshop a cut above the rest. Moreover, the owner and every member of staff here have always been very welcoming and helpful. By far my favourite book store in York!
