A feast of historic trains from the earliest days of steam to modern day, at this world famous ***free***museum in York, England. Currently in the display is the iconic Rocket, built in 1829 by George Stephenson. As pictured. Also the iconic Mallard c.1938 (pictures). Children’s activities, daily guided tours, two cafes, lots more! Go visit!

One of the best museums I've been to! Even for somebody not hugely interested in trains, you can't fail to be impressed by the railway museum. The trains are really impressive, well maintained and accompanied by loads of information. There are talks and demonstrations taking place all day long. The cafe is also really good offering a great selection of cakes, coffees and freshly prepared breakfast. Made even more impressive by the fact it's free entry!

The National Railway museum at York went way beyond expectations. The displays are really well done, and the exhibitions are vast! The layout of the museum is excellent, with room after room of displays with something for everyone - train buff or not (I’m not). The cafe is excellent; parking easy and ideally located for the centre of York. All in all, a brilliant few hours entertainment, and all for free!! Amazing place - a must visit if I n York.

This is a free (suggested donations only) museum and one of my favourites in York. They have 2 giant halls full of trains where you can climb steps to look inside or even walk inside a few of them. There are some additional exhibits as well as a miniature railway for kids and a full steam experience for anyone. Just a 5 minute walk from York station everyone should make time to come here. There is also a cute cafe in the middle of the platforms with train like seating. Loved it!

Went to meet a friend and took the 2 year old and the 6 month old. Accidentally spent hours here - as soon as we thought we'd seen it all we found another part to explore. Toddler loved the play stuff, and sitting in the trains. Friend & I loved everything and there were plenty of spaces to sit and feed the baby. Only paid out £3 the whole day and that was because the toddler wanted to ride on the miniature railway out the back and I couldn't say no. Something for everyone and an incredible day out in the end!

Absolutely brilliant museum the trains are magnificent ..the Mallard is my grandson and my favourite.! The historic Royal carriages are beautiful and sitting along platforms with vintage furniture, fittings and luggage gives an atmospheric taste of bygone days.. there are two super cafes and an outdoor picnic area too.. plus a lovely souvenir shop.. there's a model railway display with various trains working at intervals and for the little ones there is a soft play area ..all in all a fabulous day out.. 🚂👍

This is a great museum for railway lovers. The museum has a large range of historic locomotives on display from the Victorian era to the present day. The engines are all beautifully painted and looked after. Older visitors are likely to enjoy the nostalgia of seeing engines from some decades ago. The museum also appeals to younger visitors who enjoy both looking at the trains and playing in the the children's areas both indoors and outdoors. The venue also provides catering and a shop where indulgent grandparents can buy toy engines.

Not a keen train spotter, I was in two minds about this visit - but all our family had a great time. It was actually very interesting to see and learn about historic / important trains and the history of our railways. There were items on display from right across the UK, which doubtless increases the appeal for visitors too. Our children had a good time - I think the exhibits manage to appeal to all ages, in a way suited to their own level. The staff were kind and helpful, especially the volunteer driving the ride on train out back. Thanks! A good gift shop too.

Amazing museum with so many fantastic exhibits. We had our 5 old with us and the visit was mainly for his benefit, but even I found myself being fascinated by the sheer volume and variation on display. Seeing the engineering skill and history on display was amazing for a non train person like me! Highly recommended

Great free attraction for young and old. Plenty to see and do while you are there. From the first train to the modern day this place will give you a view of it all. The museum also has a library for anyone wanting to know more about a specific train. This can include paint colour, schematics of the train to modifications. These records can go back many decades.
